About the Indiana Secretary of State :

The Office of the Secretary of State is one of five constitutional offices originally designated in Indiana's State Constitution of 1816. Sixty-one Hoosiers have served as the third-highest-ranking official in state government.

Historically, the duties of the office included the maintenance of state records and the preservation of the state seal, but as state government expanded, so did the responsibilities of the Secretary of State. Present duties include chartering of new business, regulation of the securities industry, oversight of state elections, commissioning of notaries public, and registration of trademarks and licensing of vehicle dealerships throughout Indiana.

 

Role Overview :

The  Indiana Securities Division is responsible for investigating suspected violations of the Indiana Uniform Securities Act, Indiana Loan Broker Act, and the Indiana Commodities Code. Investigators, in conjunction with an assigned Attorney, determine the theory of investigation, conduct interviews and gather documentation, prepare reports, and testify at criminal proceedings as necessary.


Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $60,000.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

  • Investigate potential violations of Indiana Code, predominantly Ind. Code 23-19, Ind. Code 23-2-2.5, Ind. Code 23-2-6 and Ind. Code 23-2.5.
  • Develop and implement an investigatory case outline that includes interviews with potential witnesses, victims and alleged violators.
  • Collect, analyze and preserve evidence while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Gather documents via applicable legal process.
  • Coordinate with Chief Investigator to review cases and determine the investigative plan.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, prosecutors and other attorneys as needed.
  • Gather evidence and make informed decisions and conclusions by employing deductive reasoning and analysis that leads to appropriate enforcement action.
  • Testify in depositions and criminal proceedings as required.
  • Research open and restricted databases.
  • Interview potential victims, witnesses and alleged violators.
  • Ability to write detailed reports that are clear, complete and concise.
  • Must be a team player and have the ability to work seamlessly and cohesively with Division staff.

 

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

 

What You'll Need for Success:

  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • Experience in criminal investigations.
  • Previous Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certification is preferred. Individuals without ILEA certification will be required to complete ILEA Tier III training and Pre-Basic.
  • Previous financial industry compliance experience.
  • Experience with Bank Secrecy Act.
  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and/or Certified Anti-Money Laundering (CAMS) preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel in-state as needed.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
