Project Description

Xcel Energy is offering a paid internship with the Geospatial Project Team in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN. This role involves supporting data integrity projects, applying geospatial skills in the utility sector, and collaborating with stakeholders to improve gas and electric distribution mapping. Interns gain practical experience, firsthand training, and networking opportunities within the Geospatial organization.

As an intern, you will contribute to real-world utility projects by performing tasks such as analyzing spatial data, updating digital maps, and collaborating with engineers and project managers. You will have access to industry-standard software tools, participate in workshops, and join team meetings where you can share ideas and learn from professionals. The position encourages creativity and critical thinking as you solve challenges related to mapping accuracy and data visualization. Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Enter new geographic features from base maps & aerial maps or realign existing objects.
  • Compare GIS data to asbuilt documentation, identify discrepancies and request verification of data.
  • Identify absence of specific map information and inform the engineering department.
  • Develop and execute custom queries on maps and database information.


This position is for a June 1st, 2026 start. These positions may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current student, Junior or Senior status (as of May 2026).
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in GIS, geography, computer science, or related field.
  • Able to commute to the service center, plant, or corporate officein Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the fall(up to 20 hours a week).


Preferred Qualifications

  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
  • Completed 2 years of undergraduate coursework, including classes in GIS, remote sensing, or computer science and geography.
  • Experience or Proficiency with data analytics tools.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $20.40 to $21.60 per hour
