Position Overview:

We are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Fuel Handling Mechanical Design Engineer for a long-term contract opportunity with a remote model. In this role, you will play a crucial part in designing advanced mechanical fuel handling and process systems for cutting-edge nuclear reactor projects. You will collaborate closely with a dedicated team of engineers and scientists, ensuring that our innovative designs meet both industry standards and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Development: Lead the design of nuclear fuel handling equipment and components, guiding projects from initial requirements through to final design completion.
  • Engineering Support: Provide comprehensive support for the design of fuel handling systems, employing engineering principles to create effective solutions.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Execute accurate design calculations, develop detailed drawings, and produce technical reports that document design processes and results.
  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: Work collaboratively with various engineering disciplines (mechanical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and nuclear) to specify and integrate system design and performance criteria.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Analyze and apply relevant design codes (ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA) to ensure compliance with regulatory standards in complex mechanical and process system designs.
  • Project Leadership: Oversee and lead specific technical areas within projects, acting as equipment owner or system lead, and coordinate interdepartmental activities to enhance project efficiency.
  • Supplier Oversight: Provide technical direction to suppliers and coordinate with contract administrators on deliverables, ensuring quality and timeliness of project components.
  • Testing and Validation: Propose testing programs for system qualifications, support test execution, evaluate results, and compile reports on outcomes to inform future efforts.
  • Documentation Management: Generate and maintain critical design documentation, including Engineering Design Specifications, System Design Descriptions, and Interface Control Documents.
  • Licensing Support: Support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports, contributing technical expertise throughout design reviews and evaluations.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: 5-15 years of direct experience in mechanical systems design, with a strong background in complex systems, particularly in nuclear fuel handling environments.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in ASME BPVC, Section III, Division 1 and/or Section VIII, remote tooling design, high temperature, and multi-discipline integration.
  • Communication: Exceptional technical writing, communication, and presentation skills, with a focus on attention to detail and technical excellence.
  • Team Leadership: Proven ability to coordinate and lead design efforts with minimal direction, managing multiple competing objectives effectively.
  • Quality Standards: Familiarity with quality standards applicable to design activities, such as ASME NQA-1.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Capable of sitting or standing for extended periods, with occasional bending and fine motor control tasks.
  • Minimal physical exertion required, with the ability to safely lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Primarily office-based work with an environment conducive to typing and standard office tasks.
